What Is Mobile Billboard Advertising?

Mobile billboard advertising means putting your ad on a screen that moves. Instead of waiting for people to drive past a fixed sign, the sign goes to where the people already are. This guide explains how it works, what it is good at, and where a regular billboard is still the better buy.

How it works

A mobile billboard is a large LED screen mounted on a truck or a towable trailer. It carries its own generator, so it does not need to plug into anything.

You send your artwork as a file. It loads onto the screen. The truck then drives a route you agreed, or parks somewhere your audience already gathers. When the run is finished, you get proof that it happened.

Trucks versus trailers

A truck is one vehicle that drives itself. Good when the ad needs to move several times a day.

A trailer is towed and then dropped. Good when the ad parks in one place for hours or days, because you can unhook it and take the tow vehicle away.

Fold-out and fixed screens

Some units unfold. Panels open out and lift, turning a truck-sized screen into something much wider, up to about 30 feet. Those need a few minutes to set up.

Others are fixed. What you see is what you get, the moment it parks. Less width, but nothing to deploy and nothing to go wrong.

What mobile billboards are good at

Following a crowd

Crowds move. A convention empties at five. A stadium fills at seven. A fixed sign cannot follow that. A truck can be at both.

Short campaigns

If you need to be visible for three days around an event, buying a month on a static billboard is waste. Mobile is sold by the hour or the day.

Being unmissable

A billboard on a pole is part of the background. A lit screen moving through traffic at eye level is not. People look at it because it is unusual.

Changing the message

Because it is a screen, the artwork is a file. Run one message in the morning and a different one at night if you want. No reprinting.

When a fixed billboard is the better choice

Mobile is not always right, and it is worth being straight about that.

  • Long campaigns in one place. If you want the same sign up for a year on one highway, a static billboard costs less.
  • Pure commuter routes. If the same drivers pass the same spot twice a day for months, a fixed sign builds repetition cheaply.
  • Very tight budgets over long periods. Mobile is priced by time. Long runs add up.

The honest rule: mobile wins on flexibility and attention. Static wins on cost per day over long stretches in one location.

What to look for in the screen

The screen is the product. Two numbers tell you most of what you need.

Brightness, measured in nits

Nits measure how bright a screen is. Indoors, 1,000 is plenty. Outdoors in direct sun you need far more. Our panels run 8,000 nits, which is what keeps an image readable at noon in the desert.

Pixel pitch

Pixel pitch is the gap between the little lights, measured in millimetres. Smaller means a sharper picture up close. A 3mm pitch, like ours, looks clean even when someone is standing near it. A 10mm pitch only looks right from far away.

Who uses mobile billboards

  • Brands running activations at conventions and trade shows
  • Concerts, festivals and touring events
  • Political campaigns, which need to move between neighbourhoods
  • Product launches that need a burst of attention on set dates
  • Local businesses targeting one part of a city
  • Companies advertising near a competitor

If your audience is in one predictable place for a long time, a fixed sign may serve you better. If they move, or if you only need a few days, mobile is built for that.

Common questions

What is mobile billboard advertising?

It is advertising on a large LED screen mounted on a truck or trailer. The screen carries its own generator and drives a route you choose, or parks where your audience gathers, instead of waiting in one fixed spot.

How is a mobile billboard different from a regular billboard?

A regular billboard stays in one place and waits for people to pass. A mobile billboard moves to the audience, can cover several areas in one day, and can change its artwork instantly because it is a screen, not printed vinyl.

Do mobile billboards need to plug into power?

No. The units carry an onboard generator sized to the screen, so there is nothing to arrange at the site.

How bright does an outdoor LED screen need to be?

For direct daylight you want a high nit rating. Ours run 8,000 nits, which keeps the picture readable in full desert sun. Screens under about 5,000 nits tend to wash out.

Is a truck or a trailer better?

A truck is better when the ad needs to move several times a day. A trailer is better when it parks in one place for hours or days, because the tow vehicle can leave.
